The communication strategy aims at bringing the knowledge of the existence of the nomadbase initiative to:

  • Already existing nomadbases that wish to network with other similar initiatives
  • People that wish to benefit from the experience of existing and networked nomad bases in order of open their own.

List of ideas

Each item of that list must be made into a paragraph further down the page, or a page of their own. If you have a great idea but no time to expand on it, list it already, someone else will do the job.

  • List the channels that we may use to reach them
  • Growing organically - not that much outreach beyond our peers (be aware of the couchsurfing syndrome)
  • Open a communication page to list all the communication related items.

Communication persona

Rules of the game:

Lets describe a personality that would apply to 70% of nomadbase maintainers but would not be too specific. We can use that "persona" to set the tone of our communication.

In case the community decides to go for the CasaRobino model as a standard for nomad bases such as one person maintaining the house, individual decisions, costs covered by the householder, donation accepted, full time host (added by Valentina)
I think more people agree to this. Julien who wrote this piece was just trying to make something useful. It was a day when he wanted to brainstorm with more people, but there wasn't anyone to brainstorm with! At one of the meetings here in Berlin we already concluded that there shouldn't be one nomadbase profile and that hence the proposed profile written down below is irrelevant. --Robino 00:39, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
True. I did not just use Casarobino as a template for that. I have been to a couple of similar places and tried to find some commonity (yep, that's a new word :) ) between them. Most of the time it was actually more than one maintainer, but it doesn't matter here. We don't mean to categorize the people opening their house, we just want to have a consistent picture in our mind when... writing an email to them for example. You don't write the same way when you have Idiana Jones in your mind and when you have Mother Theresa. It's just a communication trick. --Sitarane 10:00, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

So, what does a nomad base maintainer look like?

  • Age: 25-35
  • Generous
  • Narrow-minded
  • Some sort of education.
  • High degree of social skills
  • Non conformist
  • Alternative political views
  • Strong personality - Don't like to be told what to do
  • The ability to get things done even when everyone tells you to stop
  • Always agrees with everyone :" Can't always agree with everyone! Let's say he/she reaches consensus" E 10:33, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
  • The perfect host: "is everyone's needs met?" :"Same here. Can't be perfect. A good host, tries that everyone's needs are met." E 10:33, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Not necessarily traveler
  • Curious about new/efficient social paradigm
  • Lets pastamadre die every other week

When actually communicating, do it like if you were talking to the person described above.

ad-hoc meeting here at the T-house disagrees with a nomad base profile. Though the idea would be good to think who to communicate to, it might be better to keep it simple here, so be able to have a more inclusive approach.

How to reach them


  • Hospitality networks
    • Create groups
    • Publish on CS city groups and related interest groups (alternative ways of living...).
  • Facebook
    • Open a page
    • Link it to the profiles of the people participating in the initiative.
  • Twitter
    • Open an account
    • Use a hashtag
  • Other social net tool?

Put someone in charge of all that. There's nothing so pathetic than disused communication tool.

How? We're no slave of the community!


What's that? Well, let's take an extreme: Some hippie commune with just one MS Windows computer that is always off anyways.

  • Send travelers.

What kind of physical places our non-tech target are likely to be found? Re: Infoshops/ Alternative cafe's/Cultural associations like the T-house

Some organisations that are on the same wavelengh would link our website and/or put flyers on their desks and/or other, all it takes is to let them know. Also, for the non-tech, organisation with physical premisces might be the only propagation vector.
