What are the starting points ? Shall we set up a not for profit ? Shall we call it Open+M ? ( or something else ? )

What would be the initial objective of Open+M ? Keeping a braad overview and attempting to create partnerships for various approaches ?

Focusing on Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp ?

Would Open+M serve as some kind of "bureau d etude" / think tank, or rather think-connect-do tank ... in the form of a open community of practice ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_of_practice

which itself could be connecting various consultants and think thanks, and serve as intermediary ?

What would differentiate it with, for example, plan C ?
Would the focus be on replicability and facilitating common standards, while also opening up spaces for exchanges ?

Would its goal clearly be the support in the creation of physical spaces ?

Such as this space in New York ?

But for Brussels and Flanders ? And eventually also Wallonia ?

Or are each of these separate projects, with specific separate structures , in which we can be involved in or set up ?

XYZ CARGO MICROBUSINESS:
We are looking for collaborators who want to setup a XYZ FACTORY in their part of the world for selling and maybe also producing the XYZ CARGO locally. You can read more about the XYZ SPACEFRAME VEHICLES here
Its not a free ride. We are researching how to make Open Source work in reality. So far we have spend two years of time and a lot of resources in developing the system. To our collaborators we plan to deliver knowhow, blueprints and offer a course in XYZ building in the XYZ FACTORY of N55 in Copenhagen, Denmark or at Till Wolfer's XYZ FACTORY in Hamburg, Germany. In return We expect collaborators to setup a local assembly place/ or XYZ FACTORY and feedback in the form of sharing of new design ideas and a basic percentage of sales.
XYZ CARGO is a highly durable sustainable, low tech, transport cycle. If you are interested please send us a mail to: [email protected]

Dis-Assembly and Up-Cycling

I imagine the approach for manuals ( using layers of metadata that can be modified and edited / remixed freely )

as, indeed, as you mention, a dis-assembly potential.

I also imagine applications where the same meta-data is re-used for upcycling manuals.

I like to introduce the concept of "spime" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spime ) directly related to the materials themselves, as to follow up on their "story" ( history ), tracking the use ( and composition ) of the materials / components.

...

Org : Res-sources

Regarding recycling ( or upcycling ), one more potential umbrella partner organization, which can offer financial support

http://www.res-sources.be/

In comparison with a business dis-assembly point of perspective yo umentioned, and which I imagine taken into account at an initial cradle to cradle design stage,

in the context of that specific french speaking res-sources organization, I imagine focus on "up-cycling" manuals.

The partners of the organization may not as much start the cycle at initial product design, but already use existing designed materials, existing objects ( that could be spimed ) with a history.

The organization is from the french speaking part of Belgium, so it can be applied for Brussels.

For those of you reading this from outside belgium, yes, the political specifics of region / language related funding is a belgian particularity. Brussels is officially bi-lingual.

It is not only focused on recycling : it has more of an emphasis on not for profits. ( while plan c may be more b2b focused )

Strategy Brainstormings

PlanC certainly looks like people to get involved with - I considered contacting them, asked Michel about them ( he lectured for them in Leuven a few months ago ), but did not get in touch with them yet.

iMinds approach sounds interesting. Its approach that yo udescribe , eventually in combination with plan C, seem to be oriented to a more "professionally oriented" market / b2b

Certainly worth pushing in that direction too.

It may be a slightly different ( but potentially overlapping , at the level of hardware and knowledge / expertise ) organizational structure then one which aims at supporting DIY open manufacturing / coworking spaces, training of people , support for artists , etc

Which may already be more of an approach of techshop http://www.techshop.ws/ which you mentioned.

In Brussels, there is imal and fabrik ( recyclart ). But none fully addresses the autonomy and mutual support diy fablab approach of a techshop. I see potential for setting up a techshop in the ZIP area of Brussels. In Forest, Molenbeek or Anderlecht for example. Schaerbeek could also be considered.
