S : good idea.. why dont you try an experiment by asking on these lists for semantic solution to improve the freecycle system itself? hehe it might self-generate. you might link them to automenta and other sites

As it is a movement based on a very simple and clear approach, with thousands of local lists

I imagine it could be possible to register to all the list ( or extract a rss stream ? from the yahoo group lists )

and extract the data directly.

There is no one in charge. Only interested people in a common practice and intention. The lists are very focused, with a specific approach ( specific words used in the header, then description in the message )

I will start with writing an ontology...

Then find a way to interest programmers...

What probably I would need to learn to realize such project, or learn while working with others, is understanding ways to use existing softwares that have "word" recognition, in email titles, and in email content, sent to each of these groups. ( and then match them to the "Freecycle Ontology" )

The emails tend to have a certain kind of information, so the type of words, and the meaning one wants to extract seems to be less complex as more limited then for random content.
